I have recently been blogging on Facebook and GooglePlus about a client who has struggled to lose weight and reduce inflammation in his body for a number of years, a month ago he decided to try going Paleo. He has kindly agree to me posting about his progress over the next couple of months. We are calling him Paleo Jim.
He had amazing success over the first few weeks, within one week he had lost 2.4 kilos and 1 cm off of his waist. The following two weeks he lost another 1.5 kilos and another 2cm off of his waist.
Unfortunately then came the Australia day long weekend and it proved to be a battle for him!
Paleo Jim has spent four of the last seven days having alcohol (most days) and the occasional piece of toast, bread roll etc. which are all eliminated on this food plan. Hence when he weighed himself today he had put on 1.4 kilos, his waist measurement was the same at 97cm and his body fat had gone up by .6%
He has told me that the diet is great and he feels better in terms of fatigue and inflammation but in times such as Australia Day and BBQ’s its pretty hard to stick to! We will see how he goes in the next week as he has now gone back to strictly Paleo.
What is Paleo?
Its eating- meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables and avoiding- grains, beans, pulses, alcohol, processed foods, sugar, dairy and starches.
What are the health benefits?
Burning off stored fat, reducing inflammation and allergies, improved quality of sleep, clearer skin, reduction in symptoms such as IBS and bloating, stable blood sugar, balanced energy throughout the day.
There are a few different types of the Paleo diet but this is the foundation. The auto immune version is fantastic for those with any kind of autoimmune disease including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and hashimotos. Its a more restricted diet (you need to avoid nuts, seeds, eggs and some vegetables) until symptoms are under control and then gradually you can ease back into some of the foods. It really is a matter of managing your condition and most people find they need to adjust the restricted foods depending on how they are feeling at that time.
I am doing a talk on the Paleo Diet at the next Healing Haven Markets Dudley on Saturday 21st February at midday, I will discuss the benefits and how to incorporate this into your daily life. If you would like to know more please email me firstname.lastname@example.org
