Now welcoming two new Psychologists Lisa Bailey and Catherine Bull Limited time introductory appointments

At CK Health, we understand that every individual experiences the world differently. Our evidence-based assessments for children and adults are designed to provide a comprehensive developmental evaluation, clear guidance, and neuroaffirming, individualised recommendations to help you or your child thrive in daily life.

Intellectual Disability Assessments:

Signs of an intellectual disability can vary depending on its severity, and they often become more noticeable as your child grows and faces new challenges. In infants and toddlers (up to age 3), you might first notice delays in basic milestones, such as sitting up, crawling, or walking later than other children, as well as delays in babbling, talking, or communicating their needs.

As children reach school age (ages 3 to 18), these gaps can become more apparent. This can be seen through difficulties with learning, logical thinking, and understanding social rules. You may notice your child struggling significantly with reading, writing, or math despite extra help, or having a hard time managing their emotions. This can lead to low frustration tolerance and behaviours that seem much younger than their actual age.

How we determine this:

To determine if a child has an intellectual disability, our psychologists conduct a supportive and comprehensive evaluation designed to understand your child’s unique strengths and challenges. This process focuses on two main areas: learning ability (often called cognitive or intellectual functioning) and daily living skills (known as adaptive behavior).

First, a psychologist will talk with you and your child’s teachers to learn about your child’s medical and developmental history, and how they manage everyday tasks, such as communicating, making friends, brushing teeth, or following routines.

Second, the psychologist will work with your child using standardised developmental or IQ tests to see how your child solves problems, uses language, and remembers information.

The goal of this assessment is not just to find a diagnosis, but to identify the exact tools, school supports, and therapies that will help your child thrive and reach their full potential.

ADHD Assessments:

Assessing a child for ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a collaborative, step-by-step process designed to understand how your child learns, plays, and interacts with the world. Because there is no single test for ADHD, specialists gather information from multiple areas of your child’s life to get a complete picture.

What that looks like:
The evaluation typically begins with a detailed conversation with you about your child’s developmental milestones, medical history, and daily behaviors. The specialist will also ask you and your child’s teachers to fill out standardised questionnaires to compare your child’s focus, energy levels, and self-control with other children of the same age.

Additionally, the clinician will spend time observing and talking with your child directly, and they may recommend brief vision, hearing, or learning tests to rule out other factors that can mimic ADHD symptoms.

The ultimate goal of this assessment is to identify your child’s specific patterns of behavior so that healthcare providers, teachers, and your family can team up to create a personalised plan to help them succeed.

Autism assessments and what to expect:

Assessing a child for autism is an in depth process conducted by a Psychologist who has completed training in both ADOS and ADIR Assessments. The assessment is conducted over multiple appointments and involves not just the child but the family and school.

It is important that the practitioner is highly trained in this area in order to have a comprehensive and unbiased result to help guide the parents on the best support for the child.

Medicare rebates for Allied Health complex neurodevelopmental assessment items are strictly available for individuals under 25 years of age. To claim rebates on Sessions 1 and 4, you must have an official assessment referral issued by an eligible paediatrician or psychiatrist. General Practitioner (GP) referrals under a standard Mental Health Care Plan do not subsidise diagnostic Autism evaluation sessions.

A formal, multi-disciplinary diagnosis accepted across Australian support services often requires the combined insights of your GP, psychologist, and a medical specialist (such as a paediatrician or psychiatrist).
You do not need a specialist referral to begin your assessment timeline at CK Health. Our comprehensive process evaluates whether you or your child meet the formal criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR).
Once complete, you can confidently take your comprehensive CK Health report directly to a paediatrician or psychiatrist for final medical sign-off and to unlock relevant government or educational support pathways. Our team will happily guide you through every step of this journey.
